Why I Love Walking Dogs

When people think about walking a dog, they often think about exercise. Or fresh air. Or perhaps the practical necessities of leashes, collars, and, yes, doggie poo bags.

But dog walks are about much more than that.

Some of my favourite memories involve a dog and a walk.

A few years ago, I was following behind my grandchildren and their golden retriever, Lucy. The children were only eight and five years old at the time — walking together, hand in hand, proudly helping with the dog.

I happened to have my phone with me and recorded a short video.

At the time, it seemed like nothing special. Just a dog walk.

But years later, I discovered the video again while looking through old photos.

Lucy was a wonderful dog. What strikes me most now is how quickly time passes.

The little children in the video are no longer so little. The years have flown by.

Yet there they are, holding hands, walking along together with Lucy leading the way.

Dogs have a way of becoming part of our family stories. They accompany us on ordinary days that later become treasured memories. They are present for family walks, beach outings, camping trips, neighbourhood adventures, and quiet evenings at home.

Perhaps that is one of the reasons so many of us love them.

The walk itself may last only twenty minutes.

The memory can last a lifetime.

And yes, whenever you walk a dog, don’t forget the doggie poo bags.
